Soil organic matter consists of plant and animal remains in different stages of decomposition, includes microorganisms, humus and other organic compounds.

Organic matter provides a habitat for a great diversity of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi and protozoa, which play a fundamental role in the decomposition of organic matter and nutrient cycling, these microorganisms also contribute to soil health and the suppression of plant diseases.

An important question is how to increase the organic matter in pastures this could be achieved by applying rational and rotational grazing since, this allows the grass to recover, increasing the biomass and the amount of organic waste in the soil, providing organic fertilizers such as manure, compost and other organic materials can enrich the soil with organic matter, in these spaces bovine manure accumulates since, they are the areas where this type of ruminant species are managed. On the other hand, legume crops fix atmospheric nitrogen and increase biomass, improving soil fertility.

In summary, organic matter is essential for the health and productivity of grasslands, its proper management is crucial to ensure the sustainability of livestock production and soil conservation.
